General Causes of Obesity

Obesity is characterized by excess body fat that accumulates in your body. It can lead to medical problems and reduce your life expectancy. Obesity leads to many diseases, particularly heart diseases and diabetes. One third of Americans are suffering from obesity. This shows that this condition is really becoming epidemic. The problem is particularly bothersome because of the increase in childhood obesity, as overweight children usually grow up to become obese adults. There are many well defined genetic and environmental factors that are the real culprit behind the problem of obesity.

There are many different reasons that can cause obesity, but the process of becoming obese is usually the same. The person ends up increasing their body weight by overeating and eating the wrong kinds of foods and thus finding it more difficult to be physically active which in turn leads to increased weight. It becomes a vicious circle.

The main thing that leads to obesity is a dietary switch to energy rich foods with high concentration of sugar and fats. This problem should be dealt with as soon as possible, otherwise it can lead to many serious health complications. Obese people may end up suffering from arthritis, cancer, stroke and sleep apnea.

Just look around and you will surely find people of different ages suffering from obesity. Most of them have it because of having an unhealthy diet and a sedentary lifestyle, but there are also other causes of this condition. All of them should be looked into in detail.

The general causes of obesity are:

Genetic factors:

Obesity seems to run in families and this surely suggests a genetic cause. If you have a first-degree relative (mother, father, sister, brother) who is obese, you are more likely to become obese as well. Families who have a history of obesity usually develop innumerable health problems as well. People who have a genetic link to specific health problems are at higher risk of developing them, if they become obese.

The metabolic rate, blood sugar levels and hormones of the mother play an important part in the life of the newborn baby. For this reason, the babies of obese mothers gain weight within the first few months. This suggests possible inborn obesity problems.

Another factor leading to weight gain that is related to families is that they share lifestyle habits, such as the lack physical exercise and the adoption of a high-calorie diet. These are contributing factors for obesity as well.

Lifestyle Factors:

There are many environmental reasons that make people obese. These include poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle without any physical activity. People end up eating junk food with unhealthy ingredients that trigger obesity.

Psychological factors:

Individuals, who face negative emotions like frustration, sadness and boredom, use massive food indulgence to get comfort. If these emotions are frequent, they can make people indulge in bad eating habits. They end up gaining weight and turning obese. This is one of the main causes of obesity in many cases. The uncontrollable emotions of children can cause them to indulge in food and they can start eating more than they really should.

Overconsumption:

The main cause that leads to obesity is the overconsumption of food. People start to intake more calories than their body requires. Overeating turns out to be the root cause of obesity. We should maintain good eating habits so that we can maintain our health and stay fit.

Eating Unhealthy Foods:

The type of food that you prepare may be an important contributing factor to obesity. Research suggests that people suffer from digestive and metabolic disorders because of eating too much refined sugary foods, which are bad for health. The foods that contain Trans fat and carbohydrates and that are low in fiber content cause an increase in the body fat.

Lack of Physical Activity:

People who lead a sedentary lifestyle and avoid doing exercise or engaging in other physical activities turn obese. These people are the ones that need to control their calorie intake, as they are consuming more calories than they actually burn and so the fat stores up and they turn overweight and obese. So, one of the main causes of obesity seems to be reduced energy expenditure.

Obesity is a serious health issue that people are facing nowadays. Still, when you get to know the root cause of your obesity, then you will be successful in reducing your body weight and become healthy and fit for life.
