I am interested in having laser eye surgery to correct short sight but I am concerned about the longer term side effects as I get older. I can’t find much information about this subject on the web so I would be really interested to find out.

When you have laser eye surgery, can you see all of their instruments touching your eye?

What do you see during the procedure?

As, you can see, there are a lot of questions going through my head about this. I am not having it done, but I am very curious about the subject Thank you!

Answer by farmhouse168I just had eye surgery but it was for cataract removal. The prep you for surgery and then put you in what is called, “twighlight”, and you can’t really feel anything except a little water on your eye. It went pretty fast and I didn’t have any pain at all during the surgery. I had mine in the hospital and I could see some lights over head that looked colored. I was out of it but awake. They also cover your other eye and put a covering over. Later I was wheeled out and I felt fine. There was no patch involved.

Answer by …………I think the real question is, why would you want ot spend the minimum amount of money on something that will permanently alter your body?

If it helps any, her in the US it can cost a couple thousand per eye. You can convert that to your money system. It isn’t cheap

I need a description of what happens before and after laser eye surgery? Example, how many hours before surgery are you allowed to eat, wear contacts, etc. How many days after surgery can a person not watch the tv or use computer? Any more details before or after that a person needs to know, the better. Details please.

Answer by eyegirlThe best place to get those answers from is the place you are having the surgery. Typically, most places would want you out of your contact lenses for a few weeks before the surgery and you should be able to watch tv and use a computer almost immediately after.

I have 20/200 vision in my left eye and 20/50 in my right eye. How much would the surgery improve that, if you were to guess?

Answer by EyeChickSurgeons aim to get 20/20. Any limitations on that would be due to the amount of tissue they have to play with (thickness of your cornea) or the healing process after surgery.

I want to have laser eye surgery, but i found out from a friend that you could have a layer of your eye tear away and you’ll be left with nothing but excruciatingly blurry vision. Is this true? I was planning on joining the Marine Corps without glasses or contacts. If there are any other side effects please don’t forget to mention them, thank you!

Answer by CJLook on Laser eye surgery websites to find out about the side effects. I have been researching this and severe side effects are extremely rare and usually occur in people who don’t follow directions or were poor candidates in the first place. Make sure you know the requirements for vision surgery to join the Marines. I don’t know if they have any or not, but you should check to be safe.

I have hard contact lenses which I wear everyday, and have been doing so for the last 5/6 years, and I am considering gettting laser eye surgery. I know I would have to stop wearing my contacts for a few weeks before even going for a consultation but I can’t remember the exact time can anyone tell me how many weeks it is?

Also is it possible to wear soft contact lenses for a certain amount of weeks and then my glasses and then get the consultation done?

Answer by TomI had Laser eye surgery done after wearing glasses for 16 years. It has been perfect for me. I have had no changes. Of course, as I age, I expect changes. I also co-manage refractive surgery and have seen hundreds of successful patients. It doesn’t hurt, generally. There is a bit of pressure, but no real pain if you have Laser eye surgery. The PRK version (where no flap is cut) is a little more uncomfortable for the first few days following the procedure. I’ve seen several people who said they were in some pain, but healed just fine. I used to wear both glasses and contact lenses. I had Laser eye surgery done and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I can see clearly, no squinting, no driving with glasses anymore. I can read road signs, see the individual leaves in the trees (they’re not just a blurry mess anymore). It’s also nice to be able to see what time it is when I wake up. The procedure is painless (although a bit uncomfortable) but takes less than 15 minutes. Highly recommended.

I have done some reading about some pilot programs in a few of the military branches. I came across something interesting that stated: If you have had laser eye surgery in the past, you are disqualified from becoming a pilot. Is this true?

My next question is, if it is in fact true, why would that disqualify you? Laser eye surgery can correct your vision back to 20/20 and that’s what pilots are suppose to have correct? So wheres the logic in that?

Answer by Miss JI heard similar to the same thing, that in order to be a pilot you needed to have 20/20 vision, and not laser eye surgery. Yet i also heard form someone in the military that you can as long as you have lasik, and keep having it as it begins to decrease and get worse. I’m not sure though, someone answer this question! lol

I want to be a pilot in the air force more than anything. I heard that they allow laser eye surgery in some situations. My vision is 20/60 correctable to 20/10. If I should be so lucky as to get the opportunity..is laser eye surgery worth it? I don’t want to ruin my life with a mistake..but I don’t want live my life with regret either…

Answer by Charles MI aint no doctor so I cant advise you very well but if flying is what you want to do then it is worth it. But you may not be selected as a pilot in the airforce and may be stuck as a ground ops guy.
