Cardiovascular technologists perform important tasks under the supervision of a licensed physician. They look over and help care for patients who are suffering from cardiac and blood vessel diseases. The exact duties that a cardiovascular technologist performs vary depending on the area that they specialize in. Cardiovascular technologists have the opportunity to specialize in invasive cardiology, echo cardiology (non-invasive), or vascular technology. However, no matter what their focus is, the primary responsibilities for cardiovascular technologists are to review and record the patient’s medical histories and other important clinical data, as well as prepare patients for testing and monitor them during procedures.
The cardiovascular technologists that specialize in invasive procedures usually help physicians with cardiac catheterization processes, while cardiovascular technologists specializing in non-invasive cardiology perform scans, record images, and recommend relevant treatments to physicians. Often times, cardiovascular technologists are also responsible for performing sonograms and electro-grams of the heart.
Other duties that a cardiovascular technologist is responsible for are to explain the process of the tests to the patients and to evaluate findings by measuring them against the standards and taking note of the problems. This information is then interpreted by the physician in order to make an accurate diagnosis of the patient’s condition.
There are a number of different settings that a cardiovascular technologist can work in which will affect the type of tasks that they must perform. Most cardiovascular technologists work in hospitals. However, other possible places of employment include medical centers, physicians’ offices, educational facilities, and mobile diagnostic units. They also have the option of working in noninvasive cardiovascular laboratories and electrophysiology laboratories.
Employment opportunities for cardiovascular technologists are expected to grow faster than the average occupation over the next several years. This is due to the fact that the elderly population is growing, which is increasing the amount of heart related problems and illnesses. Over the next ten years, there is expected to be 20%-35% more positions available for cardiovascular technologists.
It was further reported that in 2006 the mean hourly wage for cardiovascular technologists was $22.37. The mean annual yearly salaries were calculated at about $46,530.
